South Carolina Jobs
Opening up South Carolina’s offshore areas to oil and natural gas development will add thousands of jobs for South Carolina.
South Carolina's unemployment rate has ranked among the highest in the country in recent months and higher than the national average. Governor Nikki Haley and our state and local leaders are working hard to recruit new industry to South Carolina, but our economic future will also benefit from a robust energy policy. The new jobs that South Carolina-produced energy could bring to the state would be a great asset to the community and help ensure the state’s economic and energy security.
The oil and gas industry already supports more than 60,000 jobs in South Carolina. And according to this ICF International report, increasing energy production off South Carolina’s shores could create thousands of new jobs by the year 2030.
The new jobs would be good, well paying jobs, both directly and indirectly associated with the industry. These include jobs not just in exploring, producing, refining, transporting and marketing oil and natural gas, but also through the purchases the industry makes of other goods and services that support operations. Equipment suppliers, engineers, construction companies, management specialists, and food service businesses are all a strong link in the industry. These businesses, in turn, purchase other goods and services that support other jobs throughout South Carolina and the nation.
