Senate Vote on Offshore Drilling-safety Bill Next Week

The Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee will vote next week on legislation aimed at improving offshore drilling safety.
Committee spokesman Bill Wicker says the committee will hold a markup on the bill next Thursday.
Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee Chairman Jeff Bingaman (D-N.M.) floated the safety legislation in May. The bill would stiffen penalties, strengthen well blowout–prevention standards and increase offshore inspections.
Bingaman unveiled a substitute amendment to the bill at the end of June with Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska), the ranking Republican on the panel, aimed at securing bipartisan support for the legislation.
